Well I'm all done. I did get my EIC award and promotion. I wanted it to be a suprise so that't why I told her I didnt get it. I'm glad its over and I'm happy to be home. Looking back I guess I did have some fun. It wansn't nearly as hard as I thought it would be. The things I thought would be the hardest were actually the easiest. I start training with my unit in June and it looks like I will be leaving for a couple more weeks since my summer at is in June instead of July like I was originally told. Thanks again to everyone who wrote and helped out Nel at one time or another.

4/30/09 The last letter!

4/30/09
This is the last letter!! They have been super busy getting stuff cleaned, turned in, and ready to go. He was told today that his EIC award didn't go through, but wasn't given a reason why. Monday they turn all their equipment in. Tuesday is out processing. He's happy to turn in his M16 (but he really loved it since it's name was Nelly). He says Thanks to everyone for all the letters. He won't be able to write anyone back. They are back to work so that's the end of the letter. The Last Letter!! He's hoping for a call. I received this letter on 5/4/09 and still haven't got a phone call. It's been almost 3 and 1/2 weeks since I've got to talk to him and I've only gotten 3 letters in the last 2 and 1/2 weeks. At least I'll get to see him in 2 days!! I can't wait. The next post will probably be Chuck back, so just wanted to say that it's been fun but I'm glad it's done. Can't wait to have him home, even if it's just for a little while. Who knows when he'll have to leave again.
Love,
Nel

4/28/09

4/28/09
He did it. He has a paintball thing to do tomorrow and that's it. They got their golden cross saber pins. He passed all his tests so he should get the EIC award. It has to be approved. Chuck hasn't had a shower since last Wednesday. It was really hot at the FOB. They weren't able to sleep at night, but they could take cat naps during the day in between training. Did the 20k march back. Chuck made it!! He was at the back of the pack, but he at least finished it. They left the FOB at midnight and got back to the barracks at 0615. He's feeling pretty sore now. The next week is cleaning and turning everything in. Dinner time.

4/20/09

4/20/09
Went for a nice run today. Chuck and his new battle buddy got smoked this morning because a DS had been off for a while and wanted to make sure he could still do a good job smoking them. He thought it was funny that I forgot to turn the gas back on when me and Dad were starting my motorcycle. He says he won't give me a hard time about it but Dad did already so that's OK. They are getting ready to leave for the FOB so no more letters for a while. They eat field chow(small portions of whatever they send out) and MRE's for the next week so he isn't looking forward to that. Then they'll train for one day when they get back and then do all of their out-processing and turning in gear. He hopes that he'll get a phone call when they get back, but not for sure if it's gonna happen. Time for shower and bed. Fireguard tonight. It'll be at least a week of so until another letter.

4/18/09-4/19/09

4/18/09
Today has been a good day so far. He talked the DS into letting him take the PT test and he passed with a 266( had to have 230). The DS made sure that he knew if anything happened to his shoulder he was getting in trouble. He did 78 push-ups, ran the mile in 14:20, and 62 sit-ups. He is writing 2 essays that he has to turn in. Then sometime he will be going in front of the board. (some big high up guys, I guess). Then they got smoked. And then they went and got haircuts, and got smoked again. He has fireguard again tonight. He enjoyed getting the letter and card that everyone signed on Easter. Got smoked again. Time for shower and bed.

4/19/09
He is talking a lot about our trip to Nashville. One of the guys he's friends with is from there so we may meet him for lunch one day. Then he told me the more I save on a hotel the more I have to spend on a coach purse at the outlet. Still in red phase. His shoulder is hurting him more today(couldn't be from the push-ups, could it). They didn't have any of the bad weather that they were getting down south. He is already trying to plan a get together for when he gets home. We'll let everyone know about that.

4/17/09

4/17/09
They are all back in red phase because of the candy thing and they are all really mad. That means 30 second showers, 2 minutes to eat, and all that good stuff from when they first started. They are also not getting their mail. He got to drive the tank and Humvee yesterday and he enjoyed that. It was just 4Th platoon so it was more chill (Chuck's words not mine). When they are in the barracks they have to sit in the hall, unless they are cleaning or sleeping. He went back to the clinic about his shoulder today. They put him on restrictions and gave him some ibuprofen and a muscle relaxer. The Dr. thinks it's a pulled muscle. The final PT test is tomorrow, but he's not sure if he can take it because of his restrictions. He passed the 3 tests he took the other day. Just one more left but that's when they are out at the FOB for the week. He was told that there is a minimum score of 270 on the PT test, but he hasn't heard that from the DS yet. He wanted everyone to know that he probably won't be able to get letters out for a while. He found out that he needs to get 230 to qualify for the EIC (excellence in Cavalry) award. He is the only one from his platoon that is qualified. He will have to go in front of the promotion board and write essays if he passes the PT test. They are still telling him that he can't take his PT test tomorrow so he's upset about that. The make-up date is the day after they come back from the FOB, march 20k back from the FOB. He's hoping he can do it tomorrow and not have to wait, since he felt bad after the 15k march. He finally got some mail tonight. Got some from me, mom, and grandma.

4/14/09-4/15/09

4/14/09
Chuck had fireguard last night. He had the last shift which meant that he started at 0040-0200 and never got to go back to sleep. Also the new troop is still getting yelled at so that's even less sleep. They are reviewing the Humvee's and Bradley's today and get to start driving them next week. 2ND and 3rd platoon made the DS's mad so they all got in trouble and had to get dress and go outside in formation at 2100,2200,2300,0000,0200. (9pm,10pm,11pm,12am,2am). Chuck just finished laundry and has his locker all straightened out. He was made temporary Platoon Leader because a lot of people have dentist appointments today. Took another test and passed with flying colors. There was a guy that was sneaking and buying candy and selling it to others. The DS's did a sting and caught him but now everyone is in trouble for it.

4/15/09
Back to red phase thanks to the candy smuggler. Not allowed to make calls, write letters, or anything else. More getting into formation last night. 3 more tests to take today.

Just Nel

I was checking the picture website and there is quite a few pictures of Chuck on there. Check the April 5Th, 10Th and 12Th dates. If you forgot the website it is http://www.dropshots.com/perezjc1 There are some really good ones.

4/13/09

4/13/009
No PT today. Chuck hurt his shoulder a few weeks ago but didn't tell me. He is going to sick call today to have it checked out. They wanted to send him for an MRI, but he said no. He doesn't want to do anything that may make him stay longer. He just took some ibuprofen and that was it. At least it's documented so if he has problems later they should cover it. They played capture the flag which Chuck thought was pretty gay. They had to yell Bang, Bang to simulate shooting. Had a brat on a bun with mustard for dinner. He was excited about that. He said that it was fantabulous. Anyone going to graduation (May 7Th) Chuck is thinking about driving to Lovelace Cafe in Nashville for lunch Friday. It is about 2 1/2 hours from Fort Knox. Chuck is a little jealous after getting Brandon and Erica's letter. Talking about going to Cubs games and Bulls games and summerfest. Rack time so that's it tonight.

4/10/09-4/12/09

4/10/09
Busy day today. Pt this AM. They were told no phone calls the rest of training. Tonight was the best dinner Chuck's had since he got there. Ice cold chocolate milk, new rolls, meatloaf, potatoes, and beans with bacon. He went to the Good Friday service tonight and then when he got back found out he was fired from Platoon Leader because he went. He was pissed about that.

4/11/09
No scheduled training today. Doing reviews on weapons systems. They didn't hand out mail last night because supposedly to many people went to church. A new Bravo troop just started so F troop was up all night listening to B troop get smoked. All the full time guys got their station assignments. One guy was told Hawaii before (tentatively) but is now going to Georgia. Just a little disappointing. They are actually getting phone calls today. Chuck waited till later because he knew I was at work when everyone else called. He's lucky they didn't take it away from him before he got to use it. I sent him a picture of our new TV in the bedroom. He said it looks nice and can't wait to use it. And he said Thanks Brandon for putting it up. I also sent him a picture of the new CT scanner at Belvidere, since he didn't get to come for the tour. He thinks it looks nice. They're still getting smoked because anytime they have free time the guys do things they're not supposed to. Then they wonder why they got in trouble. He is wanting to have a get-together once he gets home and settled. Another good dinner tonight. Same thing except corn instead of beans. He also asked for another apple pie so I'll be busy making that Tuesday before I leave. Can't wait. Graduation is almost here. He had sent me some flowers earlier in the week(thanks Mom) and forgot until I told him I liked them on the phone.

4/12/09
Happy Easter! Still little sleep thanks to B troop getting yelled at. When to church today. Rumors were flying that they were going to get another pass, but Chuck doesn't believe it. He finished up his laundry. They found out that it really was a rumor and they aren't getting a pass. They did go out and do PT for 1 1/2 hours though. Chuck actually enjoyed this. He does his long trip 4-23 - 4-28 so he will be out in the field the whole time. Won't be able to write or receive letters, but he said keep them coming. He loves getting them. He wants everyone to stop writing letters on the 1st of May. He'll be done and gone by the time he'd actually receive them. Someone stole some of his girl scout cookies from the DS's office in the middle of the night and brought them to him. He ate half a box and gave them the rest and said not to steal anymore because it's to risky at this point. Who'd want to start all over again.

4/8/09-4/9/09

4/8/09
Chuck was very excited because he got to take a 9 1/2 minute shower the night before. They started off the morning by standing in formation for 1 1/2 hours. They brought a K9 in to search the barracks. Class on the automatic grenade launcher today. Done with classes for the day. Had a class on driving safety that sucked. They aren't getting any phone calls and the DS's aren't picking up their mail, so the guys are all mad.

4/9/09
Chuck's battle buddy did something and the DS is mad at Chuck for it. He doesn't know what. Shot the grenade launcher today. He enjoyed that. It takes 4 hours for setting up and getting everyone through, but only 2 minutes worth of shooting. Nice day today, upper 60's, lower 70's. Went to church tonight.

Monday, April 13, 2009

4/6/09-4/7/09

4/6/09
Good day so far. No PT this am. Had a land navigation class early. It was raining and snowing. Now cleaning the barracks for inspections tomorrow. No phone calls today either. Chuck has to do laundry tonight. They mapped the march they did the other day and it was 17.8k instead of 15k. He's not looking forward to the 20k which will end up being more like 22k probably.

4/7/09
Got a lot of mail today so he was excited about that. They have a class today and inspections. No PT again today. He's just waiting for his laundry to dry. Inspection done. Everything was OK. Chuck is ready to be done. It's getting closer.

4/3/09-4/5/09

4/3/09-4/4/09
Up early to head to the camp. It's set up with 2 gates, 2 towers, 10 bunkers and 13 tents. It's like what they would stay in when deployed. Chuck got all first time goes on his tests. Just a few left now, but they are the hardest ones. At night they have artillery simulators making noises. When this happens everyone has to dive to the ground, then run for cover. Since Chuck is PLT leader he then had to run around the entire camp to every bunker and take a head count. He said he did this about 15 times. They were up till 2am doing that and then woke up at 5am. Then they headed back. It was a 10 mile road march back. Next time they do this it's 5 nights, 6 days there and a 20k march back. He's hoping for a phone call but it didn't happen.

4/5/09
Went to Church. Had coffee and cookies. Got to go to the PX for some shopping. No phone calls again. The DS's are treating them like they just started. People are still screwing up all the time. Did some light PT today. He has a blister from the road march and it hurts to walk. He got some blister pads from the PX.

4/1/09-4/2/09

4/1/09
Happy April Fools Day. Chuck started off the letter by telling me he's pregnant. At least he hasn't lost his sense of humor. They did a faster paced troop run today and he kept up just fine. Class on the Bradley's again today. They got moved back to there original chow hall today(it was damaged in the ice storm and had been closed). It's closer to the barracks and Chuck's troop gets to go first. He heard some music today from the DS's truck and has it in his head. A song from Flo-rida.We got to talk on the phone again tonight. Twice actually. We talked for about 10 minutes and then he called back for about 15 minutes. He got more letters today. One from Grandma Jean and one from Grandma Bev and then a few from me. Chuck is wondering about the Cubs and Icehogs, but I've kept him updated. He got weighed the other day and is 161. It's been about a year since he started trying to lose weight. He was about 200 when he started last April, and he was 174 I think when he left for basic.

4/2/09
Busy day today. Demolitions class. Got to blow stuff up, which I know he's been waiting for. When they got back they had to get everything packed for their trip. Only 3 minutes for dinner again tonight. One platoon got put back in red phase. Chuck got assigned a new battle buddy today. He's a little bit of a trouble maker and the DS put him with Chuck so he can straighten him out(or so he told Chuck). Bible study tonight. Chuck had 2 slices of pizza, 2 Krisy Kreme doughnuts and some Tang. He said that it made up for not having time to eat dinner. It'll be a little bit before another letter since they're going on their trip for a few days and won't be able to write.

3/30/09-3/31/09

3/30/09
Chuck got some new paper for my letters because I didn't like the fringe stuff on the side. I kept cutting it off to save his letters and when I told him this he said he'd get some special stuff for me. They did a easy run this am, then had a radio class. After lunch they got smoked for about 45 minutes (people were sleeping again). Then they had to move their bays again. They are getting ready for their trip this week. They will march out there Friday, stay the night and march back Saturday.

3/31/09
Not a good morning. Some guys didn't like the way Chuck was platoon leader and they tried to steal part of his gun and get him in trouble. Chuck was sleeping when they snuck in but he saw them do it and got them in trouble instead. Neither guy would admit to it when Chuck questioned them, so Chuck went to the DS. Of course then everyone got smoked and a lot of guys were pissed because they knew who did it. They finally came forward and they are in a lot of trouble. A LOT. Chuck said that he straightened them out and they won't be bothering him again. Today someone got a letter that had 13 pages of Chuck Norris jokes so they are reading those and laughing.

3/25/09--3/29/09

3/25/09
Rainy and nasty day. Ran a couple miles this morning. They are waiting to march to class. The had class on a missile that you fire from your shoulder and some long range scopes. They were both cool. Finance class sucked again. They got smoked afterwards. He got a letter from my mom and grandma that they sent while in KY with Chuck. He appreciated it. He wasn't supposed to have fireguard again, but got told he had to do it tonight.

3/26/09
Easy PT this am. Had class on calling for artillery fire. He really liked this one. People were screwing around during class so they're going to get smoked later. Then he drew me a picture of me with my new coach purse that I got for my B-day to make me smile.

3/27/09
They had classes on the Bradley fighting vehicle today. Chuck was made platoon leader again. If you are platoon leader you don't have to do fireguard which is a plus, but you are always the last in line to eat so that evens it out. He said this has been the best week so far. Good PT, good classes. He just doesn't like the smoking because people are still screwing up. He also said today that my dad has some of the worst handwriting he has ever seen. But he still appreciated the letter, though. C-troop had family weekend this weekend. Chuck said he wished it was them again, but C-troop will be wishing they were F-troop when they graduate in 6 weeks. Some guys got caught with food in their lockers and got in a lot of trouble. Some are losing pay over it.

3/28/09
Troop run this am. Had a good day. Good classes. They had a tornado warning tonight and all had to go in the halls. Did more PT after dinner and then Chuck ran 2 miles. That's a total of 4 miles for the day. Studying for a few more tests they'll have to take.

3/29/09
Got to go to the PX today for some much needed supplies. We got to talk on the phone tonight so that was great. Chuck got a free hour to call and go to the PX so we talked for almost 30 minutes and then he went shopping (and got a candy bar). After mass today they were supposed to have bible study but instead someone was there to do a financial class. How exciting. This one was a little more about investing so Chuck got more out of it.

3/22/09-3/24/09

3/22/09
Chuck said that one guys from 2ND platoon never came back tonight, after his family pass. A few guys from Chuck's platoon didn't shave. He said the smoking wasn't to bad, though. Chuck went for a run later that night with a guy from his platoon. He didn't eat much at dinner chow since he was still so full from the weekend. Chuck said that everyone that proposed over the weekend got told yes, but he still thinks they're suckers. He's happy because now he has songs in his head (not cadences).

3/23/09
They went for a troop run this am then did PT. Then had classes and then lunch. Another class after lunch. They are waiting around for the next thing. Everyone else is sleeping and if they get caught they are in big trouble. They had a finance class tonight and also will have it the rest of the week. Chuck doesn't like it because it's many for the full time guys. Someone got in trouble and they only had 3 minutes to eat dinner. Fireguard tonight. Longer shifts now, but less days so they'll see how that goes.

3/24/09
Early PT today. Now they are waiting for class instructions. They had a radio communications equipment class. Chuck enjoyed that. Now they are going to a Humvee class. It's a nice day out today. Humvee class was good. Learned how to do the initial pre-check and maintenance. More PT before dinner. They are doing a long run in the AM. Waiting for tonights finance class. Done with finance class and got another smoking.

Family Day and Weekend Pass

3/19/09-3/22/09
I left 3/19/09 for Family Day. It's kind of a boring drive to KY. I was on only 3 roads the whole way there. The family day ceremony started at 1000 on Friday 3/20/09. All of the soldiers were sitting in the front of the theater. There was a little skit about getting up in the morning and how they do PT and then we watched them march to their barracks. After the finally released them I got to sign Chuck out for the weekend. It was a tearful reunion on my part. I think that's about the happiest I've been in a long time. Chuck had lots of plans for the weekend. Eating, sleeping, eating, sleeping and eating. We went to Applebee's for lunch, pizza for dinner, with apple pie and ice cream for dessert. Shoney's buffet for breakfast, fried chicken for lunch, Chinese for dinner with apple pie and ice cream and then sonic shakes and ice cream before bed. Then waffles for breakfast and Red Lobster for lunch. We relaxed in a park listening to music, till I had to get him back on Sunday. And of course it was a tearful goodbye (on both parts this time). 6 more weeks till a can go to KY and bring him home with me. Can't wait for that. I'm counting down the days again (45). The girls (dogs) weren't sure what was going on when I got home today. They kept smelling me and then running outside to see where I had him hiding. Well, not to much longer and they'll get to see him. Graduation is May 7th, so I'll head down on the 6th. I'll keep everyone posted. Not sure when I'll get my next letter or phone call.
Nel

3/4/09-3/15/09

Sorry, it's been a while since I've posted. Been very busy with a new job and a national registry test that I had to take.

3/4/09
Got fitted for his dress uniform today. They had a full blown inspection of their barracks today, but everything was good. He got letters from me, Grandma and Grandpa Keef, Sean and Cathy. He was very excited about the pics of Gabe and is hanging one up. He is very happy about having the cough and throat drops. He gave me a website that you can look at http://ouroperationappreciation.com/default.aspx A chaplains wife runs it. She takes pictures and posts them. Chuck will be under the F troop pics. I think I spotted him in a pic or 2.

3/5/09
They did a confidence course today that Chuck really enjoyed. After they got back someone did something stupid and the whole platoon got smoked. Fireguard tonight and tomorrow. While on the obstacle course, he got kicked in the eye and face and now has a strawberry/black eye. Warmed up to the 60's and he got a little sun burnt. He went to Catholic bible study tonight.

3/6/09
Went to another range today. They have a night infiltration course tonight. They were told that they were to do a skit making fun of the drill sgt's. It's a tradition supposedly. Their DS, who was off all week, just got back and smoked them. The night course was tonight. It was a sand pit the size of a football field with logs and barbed wire. They had to run over the log, under the barbed wire while they set off explosions. Then they'd set off flares and they had to stay still until it was dark again. The DS impersonation thing didn't go as planned. 4th platoon (Chuck's) was the first to go and the DS's got pissed and smoked them.

3/7/09
Gas chamber today. Chuck said it sucked. The after affects aren't as bad as pepper spray. You feel better after you get fresh air, but it's really bad inside. He said that it takes your breath away and feels like your lungs are on fire. Did a bayonet course today. Started to get smoked tonight, but it was chow time so the smoking ended early.

3/8/09
Went to church today and confession. Had coffee and cookies after the service. He got to pass the offering plate. There is a website www.dropshots.com/perezjc1 that has pics of Chuck. They got told today that their troop is the 2nd best in the history of fort Knox in their marksmanship qualifying scores. After lunch, they got in formation ready for their run, and then stood in formation for 2 and a half hours. The DS's searched their rooms and wall lockers. Chuck said stuff was thrown everywhere and this was the first time he's really been mad since he got there. They ripped some of his pictures. It took an hour and a half to clean up.

3/9/09

Had a road block and check point class today, then a class on IED's and land mines. Got a letter from Gates, Grandma Jean, my mom and 3 from me. Some rooms got switched today so they have a few new guys.

3/10/09
Did a room clearing course today. The barracks that they did this in is the one from the movie stripes. Chuck is really missing his radio. He requested I bring my IPOD for family weekend. Also he wants to take a shower so long that the front desk calls up and tells him that he'll have to get out.

3/11/09
They got in trouble last night and their punishment was not being able to wake up till0450. they usually wake up at 0400. They had to be in formation at 0505. Today they rode on a trail and targets popped up and they had to shoot them from the back of a truck. He got a letter from Gma and pa Keef, and a card and letter from me (and some motorcycle pics he requested).

3/12/09
Studied for testing tomorrow. Then going to march to a location and study more. Bible study tonight. They all got a piece of pizza in honor of Bravo troop graduating next week. Got a letter from Harling, Gareth, and me today. He hung the pic of my motorcycle up today and the DS said that he liked mine the best.

3/13/09
Happy Friday the 13th. Still all first time go's on his tests. He is squad leader again. Getting ready for the 12k road march tomorrow.

3/14/09
12k road march done. They get to go to a local church today for a meal and get to make phone calls so they are excited about that. They all ate a lot at the church and then had to go to chow and eat when they got back. Chuck ate lots of banana bread and cake. No fireguard tonight. We did get to talk on the phone for about 6 minutes so that was nice. They got their berets tonight and are shaping and shaving them to get them ready for family day.

3/15/09
He woke up at 0002 to write Happy Birthday in my letter just so he could be the first one to tell me (even though I didn't get the letter for 3 more days). Went to church. His PT test will be Monday or Tuesday, don't know which yet. All they've done all day is clean and eat. He said he was going to try to get a phone call since it was my b-day and he did actually get to call. We talked for about 9 mins I think.

Sunday, March 15, 2009

Another Phone Call

Chuck got to call today because they did some group running. It was supposed to be 3 miles, but they let him call because he ran the whole time and never stopped. It was about 10 minutes. He is doing OK. Mainly talked about what to do for family day. His battle buddy is sick and now in the hospital with bronchitis. Chuck is trying to stay somewhat healthy.

That's it for now.

3/2/09-3/3/09

3/2/09
He is still excited about the 25 min. phone call we got the night before. I don't know if I've ever talked to him on the phone that long before. It's 10 degrees outside and they had to do a road march. It's supposed to warm up soon. Movement while firing training today, which he thought was pretty cool. He got the socks and throat drops I sent( he asked for them). He was able to have the socks, but not the drops yet. The food is OK, but bland and he's ready for some real food. He has a big plan for family weekend if he gets his pass. Lots of food to eat. White Castle, Applebee's, Chinese, BBQ, Fried Chicken, apple pie and a brownie sundae. Looks like I'll gain 20 lbs. while I'm gone. Another guy has pneumonia. He may have to get recycled and start over again.

3/3/09
Long busy day today. Grenade training. Ran a grenade obstacle course. Then they had an 8k road march. Chuck said that there were some big f****** hills. He's sore now. He did get the throat drops today. They get fitted for dress uniforms tomorrow. Fireguard again tonight.

That's it for now.

2/27/09-3/1/09

2/27/09-2/28/09
Had PT today. Lots of cleaning. Training today and Chuck got to start his first IV. He is enjoying the medical stuff. Finished the first 2 rounds of tests with all 100% first time go's. He also completed the test he was really worried about with a first time go. One more test to go.

3/1/09
Didn't get much sleep. He tossed and turned all night. He's realized that he likes thousand island dressing now. He never used to like it. He told me that I better bring my IPOD with when I come visit, because he really misses not being able to listen to music. They took their platoon picture today. Chuck is in front holding the flag. Fireguard again tonight so losing more sleep. I'm going to send him some pic's of his motorcycle. A few of the guys ride, so he wanted pic's. I figure I'll throw one of mine in just in case he wanted to see it.

That's it for now.

3/1/09- Phone Call

So I guess all the platoons are playing pranks on each other and stealing rifles. They were told that if they could steal a rifle from one of the other platoons that the person who took it and their battle buddy would get 30 minutes to run to the phone (across the street) make a phone call, and then had to be back inside before the 30 mins was up. So Chuck being the sneak that he is, he snuck in and stole a rifle. So him and Wood got to make phone calls. The rest of the platoon got to make calls too, but they had to share 30 minutes and their was about 30 of them so they only got a minute or so each. Me and Chuck talked for 26 and a half minutes. It flew by. We pretty much just talked about what was in all the letters, and family day coming up. It didn't seem like 26 mins at all. I remember not long ago when Chuck didn't even want to talk on the phone for a minute let alone 26.
I'll keep everyone updated as I hear things.

2/23/09-2/26/09

2/23/09
More rifle training today. Chuck is enjoying that. Everyone is excited about family day getting closer, but also getting more distracted by it. They were told that they will probably get to make a phone call the week before family day to let us know if they have a weekend pass or not. All he wants to do that weekend is sleep and order food in. Bed time.

2/24/09
More shooting today. Close quarters and night vision. Cool. That's all for today

2/25/09
At the range all day again today. They shot rocket and grenade launchers. Then they shot the machine gun with thermal sights. He said that was the coolest. Everyone was happy today. The are going to be testing for blue phase soon, but the might get put back down to white phase sooner. Bed time.

2/26/09
Today they went and cleaned all the rifles that they had used the last couple of days. Then marched back for lunch, then marched back to finish cleaning. They had some of a combat class. Chuck said he learned some new moves that put him closer to becoming a ninja. He is really missing home. Even the dogs. They were told that on March 14Th they will get an outing. It is sponsored by a local church and they get to listen to some sermon's, eat a home cooked meal and play some games. They might get a phone call. He was going to be doing his IV sticks the next day. He asked how I'm doing because I'm learning IVs at work right now. There was a big empty space at the bottom of the page so he drew me a picture of his special pancakes.
That's it for now.

2/20/09-2/22/09

2/20/09
Early morning today. They ran the obstacle course again. They got 2ND instead of 1st this time. After the obstacle course they started cleaning. They have been cleaning now for 7 hours. He was hiding in the bathroom to be able to write this letter. He had catfish for dinner and said it wasn't to bad. Chuck's troop qualified for shooting better than any other in recent history. Bed time.

2/21/09
The had a class this morning that was 1 1/2 hours and then have been cleaning the rest of the day. He did go get a haircut and some supplies. He has started drinking chocolate milk and saving it to drink as dessert. I can't believe all the sweets he is craving. Last night they were all sitting around talking to one of the DS's and Chuck's battle buddy said that one of the DS's was a teddy bear. Well, tonight Chuck and his battle buddy spent 1 1/2 hours getting their ass kicked by the teddy bear. Bed time.

2/22/09
They got woke up early this am because 2 guys from another platoon took off in the night. They caught the 2 of them at Walmart buying clothes and eating. They were brought back of course. More studying and cleaning. Chuck did go to the catholic service today . Their bunk mate that was in the hospital came back today. He was feeling better. He had pneumonia. They were kind of jealous because he had a phone, TV, all the food he wanted and his wife was able to come visit him. But he was miserably sick.
Ok that's it for now.

2/18/09-2/19/09

2/18/09
More classes today. They had heavy rain last night and some sprinkles today while they were marching. Now they are cleaning again. He had BBQ spareribs for dinner tonight and said that they were pretty good. He is ready to go back to Hopper's BBQ. He got weighed today and is down another 4 lbs. They are going to be in the field all day tomorrow so that means MRE's and field chow. They are working on land navigation. Fireguard duty again tonight, but it's at the beginning of the night so he should at least get some sleep after. That's it for the night.

2/19/09
Today was a busy, long, hard day. They got a map and compass and were sent into a forest and had to find numbered poles. While in full battle gear. They walked over 4 miles. When they got back to the barracks they ad to disassemble everything (beds, lockers, everything). It was very cold in the morning and Chuck was a little under dressed, so he was chilled. He got my letter about our phone call and said that he knew that wasn't 7 minutes, but the platoon leader at the time was running it. He is fired already so Chuck said no sense in saying anything. He thinks that they are on their 11Th platoon leader and it's been 5 weeks. It is 9pm and they are still cleaning so they are going to have to stay up late to finish. They had 2 guys try to leave today and they got in trouble. The other troop had 6 go AWOL. 2 made it out, and were walking down the road when a Captain pulled up next to them to pick them up. Time for bed, so that's it.
I will be everyone up to date.
Thanks,
Nel

2/17/09

2/17/09
Chuck finally went to sick call this am, but said it was a waste of time. They gave him cough syrup and throat drops, but they can only get them 2 times a day. He had a good breakfast, he had to go early so he could go to sick call. For lunch he had another pear (he's calling it a Nellie fruit since it's my favorite). He said that he's actually starting to like them. They had class on the 50 caliber machine Gun. It's the same one used in WWII in the B-17's so he was excited about that. They got done a little early so they sat around talking with the Drill Sgt's. The DS told them that it takes a while when you get home to get out of the military eating habits. Chuck said that he thinks he'll slow down eating. He just wants to sit at a table and relax. He said that I'd probably gag watching them eat. They mix everything together (I don't like things touching). He had BBQ beef for dinner and thought it was pretty good. I think we are going to go to Nashville or Memphis for a few days when he is all done. He's been talking to some guys from Nashville that can tell us the hot spots. He got the pics that I sent( he wanted some pics of the 2 of us). I got some info on family day/graduation in this letter and it looks like it is actually 1 day instead of 2 like they said in the beginning so that is just one more day longer till we get to see each other. They had a guy refuse to train today and he got arrested (felony charges, I don't know what exactly). They cuffed him and led him out in front of the entire troop, while they sang to him. He said that it had to be embarrassing for him. That's it.
I'll keep everyone updated.
Thanks,
Nel

2/14/09-2/16/09

Happy Valentines Day! Chuck sent flowers and cards for me. He said sorry he wasn't here, even though if he was here he probably wouldn't of done anything for me anyways. He is doing CQ duty and it is 0330. I'm not sure what the CQ stands for. He gets off just in time for wake-up call, so he can't go back to sleep. It is cold again. A few of them are going to start running on their own now since they are in white phase. He is still sick, actually getting worse. One guy is in the hospital with pneumonia, and quite a few with bronchitis. He is finally going to go to sick call, because he wakes up every morning hacking up stuff, and now his throat hurts. He was excited because they were supposed to get a real lunch today, not another MRE. They started their class on "Big Ass Machine Guns" today. They'll get to shoot them later. He's looking forward to that. They marched in full battle gear today and his body is feeling it. He said that everyone else has the aches and pains so he doesn't feel to bad. He is talking to a guy from Arizona and thinking that it'd be nice to go back for spring training again. We all enjoyed that. He is a little upset that he has fireguard again tonight. He had it 6 out of 7 nights this week. He asked me to bake him an apple pie and bring it with for family day, so I'll take care of that for him. He wants to eat it with ice cream when I get there.

2/15/09
Chuck went to the catholic service this am. He really enjoyed it and said that he will probably keep going to that one. The platoon is mad because everyone else has gotten their phone calls except them. He got another haircut and got to restock his supplies. He finally got his rifle cleaning kit he was wanting. He said that one platoon marched by him and was singing the song Hole in the bottom of the Sea. He laughed because I sing this song all the time. My great uncle used to sing it when I was little and it just kinda stuck. He sent out quite a few postcards so people should have received those already. This is his first night without fireguard so he's hoping no one screws it up for him. He asked about his TV shows, but told me he doesn't want to know anything about American idol (my favorite). He doesn't like not being able to watch the news or read the paper because he did these every day at home. He is still getting in trouble for things his battle buddy does. More cravings, lasagna and meatballs from maggiano's. Then he actually got to eat spaghetti and meat sauce for supper. When he continued writing it was right after we got off the phone. He felt the same way I did. That was the quickest 7 minutes ever. He'd like to get to call again, but he doesn't think that will happen. Bed time now.

2/16/09
They had a land navigation class today. He thought it was pretty cool. His spirits are up some when they get to do these cool classes. He said that they bussed them out 20 minutes to the middle of nowhere. They had to match the terrain and find where they were on the map. Then it was time for lunch. That didn't go so well. He was putting pepper on his food and the lid wasn't on tight and he had pepper all over his food. All he got to eat was bread and some beans. He said that he ate extra at dinner to make up for it. Now he is craving Chinese. He thinks that we'll try to find a good Chinese restaurant while I'm there. More marching today at a quick pace. He said it's pretty much a jog. He is having a hard time keeping up since he can't breath, but he's afraid that if he goes to sick call, he could miss training and have to start over again. He said that he is still in good spirits. Last week was rough but since we talked that has really helped him. They got told that if they don't pass their 2 mile run (which is what he's been worried about) that they don't' get the pass for the weekend after family day. It is shower time now and time for bed. He has fireguard duty again tonight, so he'll be tired tomorrow. And they wonder why they are all sick.
That's it for now. I'll keep everyone posted.
Thanks,
Nel

2/11/09-2/13/09

2/11/09
Still sick. Rained all day. The are getting in trouble more than ever. Chuck had fireguard for the 3rd night in a row. No wonder he's not feeling any better, no sleep. More cravings, a waffle with strawberries and bananas and whip cream and then he wants an Oreo sandwiched between 2 chips ahoy cookies and a big cold glass of milk. This one is funny because Chuck never craves sweets. He did get to eat his special pancakes for breakfast today because he had work detail.

2/12/09
Today they shot at the range. Then had to go back to the sand pit and get smoked. They have a new rule now that they have to wear safety glasses everywhere they go. Can't wait to make fun of him for that since he always calls me 4 eyes.

2/13/09
This is the day they qualified. He qualified sharpshooter. He was just a couple shots short of expert. His platoon didn't win the competition though. They were promoted to white phase today. That just means that they can do a little bit on their own. They can walk to church on their own, or back from chow. Chuck is thinking they will get demoted back down to red phase this week, because there is still a lot of guys screwing up. They don't have shower drills anymore, but still have only a certain time to take them. They were supposed to start shooting on a big machine gun tonight. Then he had to add that he thought of me when he was brushing his teeth because his safety glasses fogged up. I am so calling him 4 eyes.
That's it for now.
I'll keep everyone posted.

2/15/09 PHONE CALL

2/15/09
Chuck finally got to make a phone call today. He shot sharp shooter and was supposed to get 7 minutes to talk. We were only on the phone for 6 when he had to hang up. We mainly just discussed what he was doing and how he was feeling. He wanted to make sure everything was OK here. It seems like 6 minutes would be fairly long, but it went by really quick. The hardest thing was when I heard them tell him he had 30 seconds left. We didn't want to hang up. Now I probably won't get to actually talk to him till I go in March. Another month without talking to him. This really sucks. I did get a valentine's day card and a dozen roses yesterday and that was nice.
OK, I'll keep everyone updated.
Thanks,
Nel

2/9/09-2/10/09

2/9/09
They did their 5K march today with full battle gear. Chuck said it didn't go to bad except his back is sore from wearing gear for 8 hours. He said that it was pretty cool because looking at it there is soldiers lining the road as far as the eye can see. Then they did some more range practice. Chuck has been helping with the practical testing for the CLS class. Some of the drill SGT's have been talking about how squared away Chuck is compared to all of the other recruits. It was in the 60's for them today. The nice weather is really making him miss his motorcycle. Someone obviously made some mistakes because they are back to getting screamed at all the time.

2/10/09
The practiced at the range today. It rained all day and they were all soaked while they shot. Chuck didn't do very good and was a little discouraged by this. It was just practice though, so it didn't count for anything. He has been having problems with his battle buddy. He forgets everything all the time and really distracts Chuck. Then some of the guys heard that he had passed all the tests they've taken so far and everyone was coming in asking questions. He said that normally he wouldn't mind, but he's also trying to study for his own tests that he still has to take. Obviously they didn't pay attention enough the first time around. The also got food condiments taken away from them, so that means no syrup or peanut butter for his pancakes.d They have been getting longer showers at least. Usually a minute, but sometimes more.
That's all for today. I will keep everyone posted.

2/4/09-2/8/09

2/4/09
Not much time to write. Had CLS class again and he aced his test. Still have to wait a little while to start IVs though. He said that there is still a lot of making stupid mistakes and they all have to pay for it.

2/5/09
They are having mail call every night now. The went to the shooting range, but it was very icy and everyone kept falling. They ended up doing the simulator instead. Chuck shot really well. That's good because my phone call depends on how well he shoots. They are on there 7Th platoon leader.

2/6/09
They finally got to shoot outside today It was around 50* out. Again, he shot really good. They got to lay in the mud and shoot. Busy day again, not much time to write.

2/7/09
Today they got to shoot outside all day. Chuck said that he shot good enough to qualify as sharpshooter, but of course this didn't count. He was very excited about breakfast today because he put peanut butter between his pancakes then syrup on top. I guess this is his new favorite breakfast. He got a card form my mom and dad and a letter from grandma and grandpa. Later in the day when they ate their MRE's they were able to eat everything in it, including the coffee. He liked that too. They were told that they would be shooting the rest of the week and then do a 5K march on Monday. He took more tests today and aced 5 of them.

2/8/09
The letter today starts of with peanut butter pancake time, peanut butter pancake time... I'm thinking that he is singing this to the tune of peanut butter jelly time, peanut butter jelly time...
They still haven't gotten to go to the PX to buy supplies yet. Did some laundry and had fire guard duty the night before. Then he went to breakfast and they didn't have any pancakes so... peanut butter french toast time, peanut butter french toast time... He did go to the protestant service again today and enjoyed it. They are going to take more tests today. They did eventually get to go to the PX and he got most of his supplies. They were out of the gun cleaning kit that he wanted. He took 5 more tests today that were go-no go and passed all with go (pass or fail and he passed). They have a few more left to take on first aid. He bought some postcard and was going to send some of those off. He sent on to Sgt O'Brien and said that he'd probably send one to work too. They were told they may get to make a phone call after they qualify next week, so that would be nice. He said that it was in the 60's that day. He's wishing he could be out riding his motorcycle. I'm surprised he hasn't asked me if I got mine out yet. After dinner today the got to go to the sand pit. It is a big muddy sand pit that they made them do PT in because they screwed up. Afterwards they got hosed off to clean up. Then they finished testing. The senior drill Sgt gave Chuck he practical exam and said "God damn fucking private, you are the first shithead to get all go's today. Out fucking standing." Chuck said that any compliment you get is a good thing. Not many people passed all their tests the first time around. Chuck is one of the few in his platoon. He said there was a handful from each platoon that did it. It is bed time now and he needs to get some sleep. They leave for the 5K at 05:10 am.
That's it for now. I'll keep you updated.
Thanks,
Nel

2/1/09-2/3/09

2/1/09
They lost power again this morning, but Chuck got shaved before then so he was OK with it. Breakfast was already cooked to, so it was still warm. They got to hang around the barracks since it was Sunday. Then someone got caught sleeping so they couldn't even sit down. It finally is warming up for them. None of them like the new platoon leader at all. They think he is a dickhead. He is hoping they will get promoted to white phase, but they're not sure. More privileges in white phase (still no phone though). They got power back and were able to go to the PX but all they could do is get haircuts. Chuck said that he has a lot that he needs to hopefully they let them go back to shop soon. They did a little bit of running today, mostly sprints and walking. Then they had some classes. He ended up going to the protestant church service today. He enjoyed it and said that he'd probably go back next week. The platoon leader was fired tonight. It warmed up enough that they were warming shorts and sweatshirts. They were not able to watch the Superbowl at all. Now he is thinking about a pizza with peperoni, bacon, and onion. He said that there is still a lot of people getting in trouble for really stupid stuff. They got personal time early tonight because the drill Sgt was watching the Superbowl.

2/2/09
They were able to do PT outside today because it was warm. Then they had a combat lifesaver class for the rest of the day. They learned the 3 main things they need to know. He said that this is different then other medic stuff he has done because it's all quick and dirty. After every lesson they do practicals and a lot of them can't remember what they just learned. The DS's are getting mad at them. Most of them just barely passed the test so I don't know what they expect. Chuck had to do 185 push-ups to get all of his letters today. The first time it was 1o an envelope and this time it was 15 an envelope, plus I sent him another phone card since he said he didn't call me earlier because of not having enough minutes. He had to do 20 for the phone card, but he said it was worth it. He said that he knew I was gonna send another one after he wrote that in one letter. I had sent him some articles on Blagojevitch and they took it away from him. He said that they didn't even know he had it, but one of the DS's asked about him and Chuck said "my wife sent me and article, here read this" and then they took it from him. So he didn't even get to read it all. He said that he had some letters ready to send so some people should be getting letters soon, if not already.

2/3/09
More of the live saver class today. They are supposed to be able to start shooting on Thursday. He has a few tests coming up but he said that they shouldn't be a big deal. They did a group run today, but they broke them up into groups of really fast, and everyone else. He was in the everyone else group and he said that they barely ran a mile when people got tired and they had to stop. They were able to take 1 minute showers last night. I had told him in my letters that American Idol was back on and he had to tell me that American Idol Sucks. Their 4Th platoon leader got fired today. He said that no one has had it as long as he did. He is craving a sandwich from Famous Dave's. He is going to come home in May and just want to eat and eat and eat. He said that a beer doesn't sound to bad either. They just got to watch an IV stick and Chuck got excited. He misses being and EMT. He said that it'll probably be a while before he gets to call. I'm looking forward to hearing his voice.
That's it for today. I'll keep everyone posted.
Thanks,
Nel

1/30/09-1/31/09

1/30/09
Since the storm they haven't had any mail received so he is hoping that they'll start getting letters again soon. He hung his clothes up again to dry since the power goes out every time he tries to dry them. Still no power or heat in the barracks. His group did go to an area high school and shovel and break ice for 3 1/2 hours. He was excited about that because then the gave them a cup of coffee and a bowl of soup. Coffee has been his big thing that he's missed not having. Someone stole a packet of hot chocolate and then flushed it down the toilet. Of course it came back up and now they are in trouble. The drill Sgt is trying to figure out who did it. They did finally get a hot meal for dinner since the power was back on. He's still not feeling well. He is coughing still and he said his eyes are watering and matting shut while he is sleeping. He's gonna try to go to sick call on Monday. He is craving foods from home. First was a potbellies sandwich and chili and a shake, and then later was a whopper Jr. They are going to be starting a combat live saver class soon and they'll all get to start IVs on each other.

1/31/09
They finally did some training today after quite a while off from the storm. They did some rifle training on a computer simulator. He said that he did really good so hopefully he keeps that up and qualifies really good so we get a long phone call. He said that as they were marching back they were called to a halt and everyone stopped not sure what was going on. All the sudden a possum walked over the feet of the guy next to Chuck then right next to Chuck's feet. He said that then it ran up the middle of formation and took off. It startled them because they weren't expecting it and I'm sure they startled the possum also. They had 45 seconds for showers tonight and he said he almost didn't know what to do with all the extra time. Now he is craving ice cream sandwiches. He still has his cough, so he decided not to go to church. They were told that they should start running this week, if the weather is OK. They still aren't getting any incoming mail, so that sucks because they aren't getting any letters. I hate to see how many push ups he's gonna have to do because I know I sent a lot of letters and others have sent some too. That's it for now.
I'll keep everyone posted!

1/25/09-1/29/09

1/25/09
This was a short letter because he'd already sent one earlier in the day. Lots of snow. He's down to 164 lbs. Was 172 when he shipped out. He said to make sure when sending letters that the envelope is addresssed correctly. PVT SCHUTZ CHARLES. Make sure his last name is first. They get in trouble and have to do extra PT if it isn't correct. They already have to do PT just to get the letters, but he said that's OK he just doesn't want to do extra.

1/26/09
They did a class on the bayonet today. Then they did some kind of fights. He got hit across the bridge of his nose, but he still won. He said that he'll probably have a black eye from that. His back is still bothering him when he does certain things. He might so get that checked out if it doesn't get better. They are all starting to crave sweets but they can't have any. One guy got caught stealing the candy from his MRE (they're supposed to return it with the coffee) and they made him restart basic. I said in my return letter that Chuck better not try to steal anything because this is long enough as it is. I also told him I'd be pissed if we had to start over again. They were told that they may be able to watch the 4Th quarter of the Superbowl (they're 4Th platoon) but it would have to be with their gas masks on. He already has his order ready for when he gets his weekend pass(if he gets it, they still won't tell them for sure if they got it or not).

1/27/09
They got more snow and this morning it changed to freezing rain, then more snow. They had to make up a snow shoveling schedule. 2 man teams for 1/2 hour at a time. He is still platoon leader and they make him last in line to eat, but when he is done then everyone else has to stop eating. The drill Sergeant watches him to make sure he isn't eating slow on purpose. He said it sucks and he feels bad. The are still marching through the snow and ice. He said it feels like sand falling on them. They are all soaked when they come in. He did finally get my letters this day. He only had to do 20 push ups since they were addressed correctly and i had put them all in 2 envelopes. Some guys didn't get any letters and that really upset them. Chuck said he didn't want to read his letters in front of someone who didn't get any because he felt bad. He was also fired from platoon leader today. He said that it was taking up a lot of his time anyways. He said that the new one has already screwed up. He was supposed to have everyone in line for showers at 2100 and then they'd all get a minute shower. Well he didn't have them in line so they only got 25 seconds for there showers. He said that he doesn't have much time to write letters to everyone, but he is going to get some postcards and send those. There is a lot of down time but all they can do is clean the barracks and their rifles, not write. The weather is still bad, and they still haven't ran yet which was his biggest concern. He then continues with a lot of answers to questions i had about stuff around the house. The have been without power for a while and he had to shave by flashlight. He said that the tree limbs are touching the ground because of the ice on them. Several trees have actually fallen from the weight. Everything on the base was closed because of the weather. He said that he might have to get a new M16 because his is all rusty inside. don't know if he'll have to give it a new name or if he can keep it as Nellie. He said that he has already read my letters 5 times and he just got them that morning.

1/28/09
The told them after lunch that they would have a free day. That means cleaning again. His legs are really sore from the PT. He is still sick. Just can't fight it off with little sleep, bad weather, and PT. He's got to go get another haircut this weekend. That's driving him crazy. He is very worried about me and how I'm holding up and taking care of everything at home. I've reassured him in my letters that everything is OK but he's still worried. They are still without power. It'll come on for a few minutes and then shut off again.

1/29/09
They lost power again today. Training is cancelled for a few days because of the ice. They don't even have power in the barracks. the only lights they have are flashlights. Chuck said that his laundry was in the dryer when the power went out so now he has all his cloths hanging up around his bunk. He said it looks like the Beverly hillbillies. His eyelids are bruised from getting hit in the nose. He said it looks pretty weird. He said that the whole place is a mess from the ice storms, everything is tore up. He also said that a lot of the guys didn't seem to know what they were getting in to joining the army. They complain because the barracks aren't warm enough, they don't get to use the phone enough, they have to be outside in formation when it's raining and snowing. Obviously they didn't check into this before they signed up. The mail isn't even coming and going because of the weather. The food hasn't been to good since there isn't any power. And all they do is clean. He said that the power came back on and he put his cloths in to dry and then it went off again. He was wondering about happenings in rockford and belvidere, so if anyone knows anything interesting you can send it to him. I've been printing off some articles and sending them to him to keep him updated. He was very excited because he had early guard duty that morning and he got to take a shower on his own. There is only 1 drill Sgt at this time and he got to take a 4 minute shower. He loved it.

That's it for now. I'll keep you updated.

1/22/09-1/25/09

Still just a lot of classes going on. He did get his gas mask and they had a class on chemical weapons. They have 9 seconds to pull out their gas masks and put them on. They are doing more marching. Marched a mile in full battle gear. People are still doing stupid stuff and everyone is getting in trouble. One of the new punishments is running outside, getting in formation, run back inside and change clothes and run out and get in formation again. Thy had 8 minutes to do this. They did it 5 times and then someone got hurt and they stopped. Finally ran the obstacle course. He said that the hanging rope kicked his butt, but he did good at everything else. He's thinking that he'll probably get fired from Platoon Leader soon. They also got to do a team development course. It is puzzles that they work together to solve before going on to the next one. He said that they did OK but not great. The punishment that night was pouring water over their heads, (while inside) mud and water all over the floor from their boots, and then they had to do PT in the muddy water. then they had to clean it all up. Chuck still has a cold, but now it's more just a cough. He is finally starting to get a little home sick. He said he tries not to think about it tom much and tries to stay busy. I haven't talked to him since Jan 9Th for about 30 seconds. I did send him some addresses so maybe everyone will get a letter soon. I'll keep you updated.

The start of basic

So this letter is from the first week in Basic. Chuck wouldn't go to church on Sunday (even though it is highly encouraged) so he ended up watching someone on suicide watch. Sounds like fun. Chuck is upset because he had to go get his 3rd haircut since he's been there. It costs 4.75 each time. I found out that the phone call I thought was coming today was actually last Sunday and that didn't happen. They were told that the better they qualify (shooting) the longer the phone call they can get. That'll be in 3 weeks or so. They got there rifles and Chuck named his Nellie. He is not really enjoying the 30 second shower. He said him and his towel are usually covered in soap still. He thinks that he has lost weight. There is more time to eat but less options. Still only spoons though. He said that one guy took a lot of food and then didn't eat it all. The drill Sgt. took the food out of the garbage and made the guy eat it. Chuck was made Platoon Leader, which is good, but he said that it's also bad because the first one always gets fired. Everyone had to write a 500 word essay on what it means to be an American soldier. They keep getting in trouble because people leave their rifles laying around. They have to keep them with them 24/7 or the get smoked is what chuck says. He's still not getting much sleep. He said one night they went to bed at 2200, they got woke up every 1/2 hour, have to get dressed, go into the hall do some PT (physical training). That went on till 0030 and then he had fireguard duty 0200 till 0400. They spend lots of time cleaning, and in class. They keep making them eat MRE's cold. Chuck says that they are not to bad warm but not good at all cold. And they can't have the dessert or coffee in them. He got all of his supplies, rifle, bayonet, bullet proof vests and helmets. Have to wear these all the time. The vest is about 30lbs. He keeps saying that he can't wait to get a letter from me. I've written one every day since he left, and went to the post office Thursday to mail them after I got the address since my mail had already been picked up. So, he should be getting those soon. I'm sure he would appreciate some other letters to. I'll keep everyone updated.

1/13/09-1/17/09

I got a letter today that finally has an address. Chuck passed his PT test wih flying colors. He has gotten tired of reception. He said that they have no toliet paper, no hot or warm water, only 2 washers and dryers that work, and they got forks taken away and can only use spoons to eat now. Not sure what caused that. He did ship out on Friday to start Basic. He said these barracks are a lot nicer. They have 8 men to a room and a shared bathroom and shower for the entire floor. They had a shower drill last night and he said that everyone got in line wearing shorts and towel and soap in hand. They have 30 seconds to take their shower. I did find out that basic graduation is march 19/20 and AIT graduation is May 6/7th. He thinks he'll get to call on Sunday so that'll be nice. To bad it's only for a minute or two. The address to send to is

PVT SCHUTZ,CHARLES
F TROOP 5/15 Cavalry 4th Plt.
3576 Wilson Rd
Fort Knox, KY 40121-5728

I will keep everyone updated as I hear things.

Jan 10/11 2009

Another letter today, but still no address to send to. This letter is from before he actually started Basic, while he was still in reception. It is actually dated before the previous letter, and sent before the previous letter but I didn't get it till today. He said in this one that he thought there might be a problem with some of his pay, but everything is OK with that in the next letter. He said that he did finally get some sleep on Saturday, but still can't sleep for more than 1/2 hour at a time. He got to clean the barracks on Sunday. You either clean or go to church. He said cleaning was OK though, because they put you at the front of the line for chow. He also said that there are 2 big commercial coffee pots in there full and they can't have any of it. "That's torture!" Today I also got some info about getting my ID card. Not sure exactly what to do so I'll maybe have to call his recruiting officer and ask some questions. Well, that's it for now. I'll keep everyone updated.

1/11/09-1/12/09

I got another letter in the mail from Chuck today. We said that they haven't been doing much. Sunday they sat around and talked all day. He has met a 39 year old cop from Idaho that is also a Cav. Scout so they have been talking quite a bit. Finally got his promotion and pay straightened out. He had to get more shots and a hearing test on Monday. He said on Tuesday the were going to be doing their PT test and just finishing everything up. As far as he knows he will be starting basic Friday. He had to do fire guard duty from 0300-0400 that night so he went to bed early. I will keep everyone updated as I hear things. Nel

First Letter

I got a letter in the mail today from Chuck. He didn't think that he would be able to send it yet, but obviously he did. He said that he arrived in Ky at 1045pm on Wednesday, then got on a bus for the ride to fort knox. When they got there they met some of their drill sgts and had a quick briefing, then ate and went to bed at 2am. They were woke up at 4am and started all the paperwork and medical and dental checkups. He got 4 shots and got blood drawn. He said that 5 guys passed out and one hit his head and had to get staples. That night they went to bed at 9pm. Woke up at 3am the next morning. He got his hair cut and finally got to go shopping Friday( this is the day that he called me). He said that they are getting yelled at a lot. They only have 8 minutes to eat their food and they are being screamed at the whole time. He said the food is good though and there is a big selection. He is having a hard time sleeping, said that he can only sleep a few minutes before waking up again. He ended the letter here because they were getting yelled at for some guys talking. I still don't have an address for him yet, but I will let everyone know as soon as I get one.

Chuck got to call today!

The phone call was a little late but it did come today. Chuck called at 10 this morning to tell me that he got there OK. It was hard to hear him because the phone didn't get very good reception. He got there late Wednesday night. He is stuck in reception till next Friday. Reception is where they wait till basic starts. They make sure all the paperwork is in order, and everything is ready to go. By the sounds of it this isn't very fun because all of you sit in the big building all day and night and can't do anything. Can't send letters, can't run. They did get to go to the base store today which Chuck said was good because they took his deodorant from him at the airport and he had been without it for 2 days. I'm guessing he got his haircut already, but he didn't say. I only got to talk to him for about 2 minutes before he had to go. He did say that he had written some letters already and would send them as soon as he could. So Basic starts next Friday and if all goes well I will get to see him 10 weeks after that. I will keep everyone updated as I hear things.

So, since I said that it would be a while till I heard from him , Chuck just called to try out his phone card. He said that has been sitting at O'Hare for about 8 hours and has another 3 hours till his plane leaves. He won't be in KY till later tonight, so hopefully he'll be able to call tomorrow and tell me he's there. That's it for now.

Left Today

So as everyone knows, Chuck headed out at 0430 this AM. I (Danielle) will be taking care of the blog and keeping everyone informed while he is gone. He had to go to do more routine testing today, before he could get on a plane for KY. He is supposed to be able to call and tell me when he gets there. Not sure if that will be tonight or tomorrow sometime. I will let everyone know when I here that he is there OK.
